Stan* discusses visitors

Orange County Jail Interview

*Names have been changed to protect privacy.

Jail Media: How often could you have visitors come to the Orange County Jail?

Stan Smith: You could have visits on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Jail Media: And you could have as many visits as you wanted?

Stan Smith: No, you could only have one a day.

Jail Media: So you could have up to three a week?

Stan Smith: Yeah – just on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So you have to figure out who is going to come each day because say your sister comes and your girlfriend – only one is going to be able to see you.

Jail Media: And those people – they probably have to check in, right?

Stan Smith: Oh yeah, definitely – they’ll run your ID while you’re in line.

Jail Media: How long does it usually take? I mean, if you’re girlfriend came to see you how long was she usually waiting to get to see you?

Stan Smith: About 2.5 or 3 hours.

Jail Media: She would wait that long?

Stan Smith: Yeah – every week.

Jail Media: And how long was the actual visit?

Stan Smith: About thirty minutes, but they can give you anywhere from ten to thirty minutes – they can easily cancel it right away.

Jail Media: And what was it like? Did you have a window between you and a phone to talk through?

Stan Smith: Yeah – it was just a big glass window and you’re on a phone and your visitor is on a phone.

Jail Media: Could you hear pretty well?

Stan Smith: Yeah, it was actually pretty clear. From what I heard the place in Irvine, the Farm, allowed contact visits. You could actually hold your girlfriend’s hand and stuff like that. You can give her a kiss.

Jail Media: But none of the county jails do conjugal visits, right?

Stan Smith: Oh, hell no – I don’t even know if they do that in the state prisons – I think that’s just in the movies.

Jail Media: So you just get those three visits per week?

Stan Smith: Yeah – oh, and actually you can have more than one person in each visit, you can just only have one visit a day. So if you wanted you could have your girlfriend, your mom and your sister all come together for one visit.

Jail Media: Is there a limit on how many people?

Stan Smith: Yeah – three people, I believe.
